What we can connect, and what needs a licensed trade

In NSW, connecting an appliance to the water supply is plumbing work and hardwiring one is electrical work. Both need a licensed tradesperson by law — not because it’s difficult, but because the consequences of getting it wrong are a flooded floor or a live chassis.

Plenty of appliance work isn’t either of those things. Reconnecting a washing machine to the taps it was designed to plug into is a different job from installing a new water outlet. Here’s exactly where we stop.

The cheap version of this job is the expensive one

A washing machine hose that isn’t seated properly doesn’t leak on day one. It weeps behind the machine for a fortnight, and the first anyone knows is a swollen kickboard or a bill from the neighbour downstairs.

That’s the whole reason we run a fill, drain and leak check before leaving. It adds ten minutes to the job and it’s the difference between an appliance that’s connected and one that’s connected properly.

Can you do a dishwasher installation?

How much does appliance installation cost in Sydney?
It depends on what’s already there. If the dishwasher space has an existing water connection, waste point and power point — which it will if you’re replacing a dishwasher or reconnecting after a move — that’s a reconnect and we can do it. If there’s no connection point yet and one needs to be created, that’s plumbing work and needs a licensed plumber under NSW law. Tell us which situation you’re in and we’ll tell you straight away.
Can you do a range hood installation?
Only where the unit is plug-in and the ducting already exists — we can take an old one out and fit a like-for-like replacement. Most range hood installation, including anything hardwired or where ducting has to be run through a wall or roof, is licensed electrical work and often building work as well. We’ll tell you which yours is before you book so you’re not paying for a wasted visit.
How much does appliance installation cost?
Booked with a move it’s usually part of the moving quote rather than an extra. Booked on its own it’s priced per appliance, and several in one visit costs far less per item than a single call-out. What changes the price is whether the connections already exist and how tight the access is. Tell us the appliances and we’ll quote within two hours.
Can you connect my washing machine?
Yes, to existing laundry taps and waste. That’s the most common appliance job we do. We refit the transit bolts before the move, drain the hoses, reconnect at the other end, level the machine on its feet and run a fill and drain cycle to check for leaks before leaving. If the inlet hoses are perished we replace them rather than reusing them.
Why do transit bolts matter?
A washing machine drum hangs on springs and dampers. Moved without the transit bolts refitted, the drum swings against the casing and can damage the bearings or the suspension, and manufacturers routinely decline warranty claims for exactly this. If you’ve lost the original bolts, tell us when you book and we’ll sort it out.
Do you install ovens and cooktops?
We can move and position them, and fit anti-tip brackets on freestanding ovens. We don’t connect them. Electric ovens and cooktops are usually hardwired, which is licensed electrical work, and anything gas requires a licensed gas fitter without exception. We’ll tell you which trade to book and what to ask for.
Do you work with gas appliances?
No. Gas work in NSW requires a licensed gas fitter, full stop — and unlike most licensing rules, this one exists because getting it wrong can kill people. We’ll disconnect nothing gas and connect nothing gas. If your cooktop or heater needs moving, arrange a gas fitter to isolate it before the move and reconnect after.
Can you plumb in a fridge with an ice maker?
We can connect one to an existing plumbed water point behind the fridge. If there isn’t one, running a new water line is plumbing work and needs a licensed plumber. It’s a common one to get caught by — plenty of kitchens have the space for a plumbed fridge but no water point behind it.
Do you take the old appliance away?
Yes, as a separate line on the quote. Old whitegoods can’t go in a council pickup in most areas and fridges need degassing before disposal, so they go through a proper e-waste and metal recycling stream. See rubbish removal.see rubbish removal
Do I need to defrost the fridge first?
Yes please, at least 24 hours beforehand, and empty it. A fridge that hasn’t been defrosted leaks meltwater across the truck and into whatever is stacked beside it. It also needs to stand upright for a few hours after the move before being switched on, so the compressor oil settles.
Can you install a dryer on the wall?
Yes, where the wall will take it. Wall-mounting a dryer needs the bracket fixed into studs or a masonry anchor, not just plasterboard. We check what’s behind the wall before drilling, and if it won’t hold safely we’ll tell you rather than mounting it anyway.
What if you find something that needs a licensed trade?
We tell you what it is, which trade you need and what to ask them for, and we do everything else in the meantime. You’re not charged for the part we can’t do. It’s worth saying plainly: unlicensed plumbing or electrical work voids your appliance warranty and can void your home insurance if it causes damage, which costs far more than the trade call-out you avoided.
